TAKE A DIVE & SEE RED

TAKE A DIVE & SEE RED

0 Comments | Sunday Mirror, Nov 22, 2009 | by JUSTINE NAYLAN

TEMPERATURES in the high 20s and some of the world’s best snorkelling and diving make Egypt’s Red Sea coast a winter winner – and it’s just five hours away.

We chose El Gouna because it is quieter than better-known resorts like Sharm El Sheikh.

And as soon as we arrived we knew we had made the right decision.

El Gouna is beautiful. Purpose-built 20 years ago in the desert, it is surrounded by islands and salt-water lagoons and boasts a 10km beach.

The clean and well-maintained resort has modern shops with cheap shopping, friendly locals and varied entertainment – the perfect base for a winter getaway.

Snorkelling is an absolute must on the Red Sea’s amazing coral reefs – and the local dolphins are a highlight.

We booked a trip from our hotel with Easy Divers for about pounds 26 including lunch.

The helpful guide pointed out the best spots and even showed us where to find those dolphins.

But it’s not all about the underwater world

PUT Safety first FOR post-storm garden AND yard cleanup

0 Comments | The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, Norfolk, VA, Nov 22, 2009

RECOVERY AND cleanup from a storm like our recent nor’easter can be quite a challenge, but perhaps one of the most challenging things is to know your limits and when to call in the pros.

Never use a chain saw while standing on a ladder – tempting as it may be – to reach that one limb . If you can’t reach it standing on the ground, consider a pole saw if it’s a limb that’s not too large . Or pay someone who is insured.

Also, wear a hard hat when working under a tree . If you have a small tree that’s now leaning, stake it back to a more vertical position, but use an old garden hose where your rope or wire goes around the tree. Remove the stake in the spring.

It’s also a good idea to rinse off bushes and shrubs in case they got salt spray and to expose the leaves to the sun if they got covered with crud and dirt. That will help them get ready for winter.

As long as water is flowing out of the down spouts, I’d wait to clean gutters until all the leaves have fallen off the trees . However, if no water is coming out, clean the gutters . If you don’t, the weight of all that water can pull them loose or off.

Can’t stop composters

A composting workshop was held Nov. 11 at the Ernie Morgan Center in Norfolk. It was a dark and stormy night during the nor’ easter , but I was pleased to see I wasn’t the only one who showed up. In fact, a dozen or so others also made the drive.

The workshop was hosted by Holly Carson, education manager for Keep Norfolk Beautiful , while Thomas Chabi gave a demonstration on making your own compost barrel .

Chabi’s barrel isn’t his own design, but like a good tinkerer he made a few slight changes that made for simpler construction and assembly. The neat thing about this is the barrel itself is recycled ; the materials cost $30 to $40.

Chabi’s first barrel took three to four hours to make, and now he can make one in two hours. This was his first work shop, and Chabi did a great job

33 STEPS ..to cut your costs

0 Comments | Sunday Mirror, Aug 16, 2009 | by ANDREE FRIEZE

Finances

1 Change gas and electricity suppliers – you could save hundreds a year by buying gas and electricity from the same firm, especially by direct debit.

2 Keep track of payments – go through your direct debits and standing orders and cancel any you don’t use.

3 Get the best rates on insurance – use comparison sites to cut the cost of home, contents, boiler, building, travel and car insurance.

4 Take out a cashback credit card – these repay a percentage of your spend over a year. It’s usually around 0.5 to 1.5 per cent.

5 Swap or drop broadband – comparison websites help you find cheap packages, but if you don’t use broadband, cancel it.

6 Cut your BT home phone bills – cheaper alternatives include cable companies that package your TV and internet, or dial-up services that give you access to cheaper calls using your existing BT line.

Energy

7 Stop wasting pounds pounds pounds s on heating – put a jacket on your water tank, fit draught excluders on doors and insulate your pipes and loft.

8 Turn all appliances off – gadgets on stand-by cost you pounds 37 a year. Switch phone chargers off, too.

9 Fit eco light bulbs – energysaving light bulbs use up to 80 per cent less electricity.

10 Choose rechargeable batteries – why pay again and again? And rechargable batteries cut down on toxic landfill material.

11 Use appliances sparingly – only run the dishwasher or washing machine (at 30C) when you have a full load. Avoid tumble driers.

12 Turn down the temperature – set thermostat to 18C instead of 21C. Chilly? Wrap up warm.

13 Make use of grants – there is plenty of Government money out there if you’re on a low income, over-60 or on other benefits.

14 In hot water – fill the kettle with only what you need; put a lid on saucepans when cooking; and choose the right pan for the right hob ring.

15 Try solar/wind-up gadgets – when you need to replace a gadget, choose a solar-powered or wind-up version.

16 Water-saving shower heads – a family of four who shower once a day can save around pounds 80 on their energy bills and pounds 150 on metered water bills.

17 Stop flushing water away – save up to three litres of water with every flush by fitting Hippo the Water Saver to your toilet cistern.

Cooking/gardening

18 Ditch the ready meals – and you’ll know exactly how much salt, sugar and fat has gone into the food you serve.

19 Take your coffee to work – invest in a flask and save around pounds 2 a day. It’s also good for the environment.

20 Make a packed lunch – get organised and make your own lunch, saving pounds pounds pounds s.

21 Grow your own fruit & veg – even if it’s just a few lettuces and some herbs it will still save you money.

20 Freeze food, don’t bin it – save leftovers to eat the next day for lunch or pop them in the freezer for another evening.

21 Compost! – start a compost heap and save money on shop- boughfertilisers and compost.

22 Keep plastic cartons- re-use for freezing food or taking your packed lunch into work.

23 Replace a sprinkler with a water butt – sprinklers use up to 1,000 litres of water an hour. Water butts cost pounds 23 at DIY stores and garden centres

By-the-Mile Auto Insurance Greening Texas on Earth Day

Business Wire, April 16, 2009

MileMeter Commits to Nurturing Planet Earth and Customers Wallets

DALLAS — To mark Earth
Day, Americans are encouraged to find more ways to protect the
planet. One Dallas-based company, MileMeter
offers a creative, yet practical way to help nurture the environment
with its new auto insurance option, encouraging people to drive less,
greening not only their wallets, but also planet Earth.

Vehicle pollution continues to be a major source of pollution. Did you
know there are 500 million cars on Earth each burning an average of two
gallons of fuel a day? Furthermore, each gallon of fuel used releases 20
pounds of carbon dioxide into the environment. You do the math.

MileMeter, a licensed auto insurance company, provides economic
incentives to drive less by offering by-the-mile service for those
driving up to 10,000 miles per year, saving Texas drivers an average of
25 75 percent on most policies. Planet Earth is reaping the benefits
from these MileMeter customers fewer miles driven on the roads leads
to fewer tailpipe emissions, less toxic road runoff, and less demand for
road and parking lot construction, which helps reduce urban sprawl,
improve air quality and fight climate change.

By-the-mile insurance could cut air pollution and traffic congestion by
10 to 12 percent, said Chris Gay, MileMeter founder and president.
Texans are the first and only drivers in the nation who have the
opportunity to save
money and help save the environment with this by-the-mile auto
insurance option.

While the statistics may be daunting, Earth Day is supposed to be a
celebration. Here are some tips on how you can make a difference.
Carpool with colleagues – sharing a ride twice a week can reduce
emissions by 1,590 pounds a year. Take public transit – one bus carries
as many people as 40 cars. Walk or bike – 40 percent of trips are less
than two miles long.

McAfee, Inc. Identifies the Most Dangerous and Safest Web Searches

Business Wire, May 27, 2009

Searches for Free Music Downloads, Lyrics, or Screensavers
Revealed as Most Likely to Lead to Adware or Malware Laden Sites

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Some of the riskiest searches on the Internet today are associated
either with finding items for free, such as music or screensavers, or
looking for work that can be done from home, according to Internet
security company McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE). Search categories like these
are used to lure unsuspecting consumers to their Web sites. Hackers and
cybercriminals are often able to persuade searchers to download files
carrying malicious software that can cause consumers to expose their
personal and financial data.

McAfees report on The
Webs Most Dangerous Search Terms describes how
cybercriminals maximize their profits by seeking the largest pool of
possible victims with popular search terms about current events, gadgets
and celebrities. During the recession, McAfee has observed a growing
number of malicious search results targeted at people who want to save
money or earn extra income working at home.

Cybercriminals are smart, said Jeff Green, senior vice president of
McAfee Product Development & Avert Labs. Like sharks smelling blood in
the water, hackers will create related Web sites laden with adware and
malware whenever a particular topic increases in popularity.
Unsuspecting consumers are then tricked into downloading malicious
software that leads them to blindly hand over their personal assets to
cybercriminals.

McAfee researched more than 2,600 popular keywords (as defined by Google
Zeitgeist, Yahoo! Buzz and others sources) to assess the degree of risk
for each. Maximum Risk refers to the maximum percentage of risky sites a
user might encounter on a single page of search results.

As defined by McAfee, the riskiest set of keyword variations was
screensavers with a maximum risk of 59.1 percent. Nearly six out of
the top 10 search results for screensavers contain malware. One of the
single riskiest search terms in the world is lyrics, with a maximum
risk factor of one in two. Surprisingly, searches using the word Viagra,
a popular keyword that is also common in spam e-mail messages, yielded
the fewest risky sites. Searches with the safest risk profile included
health-related terms and searches about the current economic crisis.

Penny-Pinchers and Home Workers Beware

Consumers looking to save money, and/or searching for means of
additional income, should take note: searchers clicking on results that
contain the word free have a 21.3 percent chance of infecting their
PCs with online threats, such as spyware, spam, phishing, adware,
viruses and other malware

Ducati steals the show with Multistrada

0 Comments | Daily Post; Liverpool (UK), Nov 18, 2009 | by Harriet Ridley

DUCATI stole the show at this year’s EICMA in Milan with its new Multistrada 1200 – the most electronically advanced road bike ever produced.

The Multistrada 1200 comes in a standard version with optional ABS, or in a higherspecification S model. The S is also split into two editions: Sport, with carbon fibre frontal air intakes, cambelt covers, rear hugger and lateral air extractors; and Touring, with a centre stand, panniers and heated grips.

The Multistrada is powered by the liquid-cooled 1,199cc engine off the 1,198 superbike, but with a new cylinder head that reduces valve overlap from 41 to 11 to soften power delivery and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This Testastretta 11 engine puts out 150bhp, a huge 40bhp more than the Multistrada’s deadly rival – BMW’s R1200GS, Italy’s best-selling motorcycle
