Showcase House for the Arts gives highest award to Joy Sullivan

PASADENA – For San Marino resident Joy Sullivan, it only seemed natural to join the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) back in 1986.

“I wanted to be part of an organization that helped the community – and, especially, its schools – with music appreciation and the arts,” Sullivan now recalls 25 years later.

“But I also have always loved interior design and have helped many friends with their home decor. What a great combination.”

Sullivan’s fellow PSHA members obviously agree. This year they honored Sullivan with the organization’s highest token of esteem – the PSHA Volunteer of the Year Award.

Sullivan earned the award after taking on jobs within the organization that range from chairing the Shops at Showcase and the PSHA Gifts and Grants Committee to serving as benefit chairman of the Pasadena Showcase House of Design in 2007 and as president in 2009.

Nor is Sullivan about to begin resting on her laurels, adds PSHA President Delise Menik.

“Joy is happiest when she’s very busy,” Menik said. “She loves a new adventure, which is why she’s agreed to be in charge of tickets next year. She’s such an invaluable asset to our committee; not only is she very artistically talented but she can troubleshoot any challenge.”

Among the most memorable of those “challenges” for Sullivan was the year she spent as benefit chairman.

“It was the first time in the history of the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts that we collaborated with another nonprofit organization, Descanso Gardens,” said Sullivan who, as benefit chairman, oversaw a team of more than 30 interior and exterior designers, 250 PSHA members, and countless community volunteers in transforming the historic Boddy House on Descanso Gardens’ grounds in La Ca ada-Flintridge.

History repeated itself just this past spring when PSHA worked with the San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross to revitalize its headquarters, the Cravens Estate in Pasadena.

The nearly 20,000-square-foot property – designated a Landmark of Historical Significance by the city of Pasadena and a Pasadena Cultural Landmark by the Pasadena Heritage Society – was open from April 18 to May 16.

The 2011 Pasadena Showcase House of Design will take place from April 17 to May 15, 2011 at an as-yet undisclosed location.

“We celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2007, the year we revitalized the Boddy House,” Sullivan said. “And we’re still going strong
